Homeschool Science with Free Videos

I haven't posted much this last year or so, a lot of life going on around here with pregnancy loss and then pregnancy and keeping up with homeschooling 3 kids and all their activities while pregnant.  This year we decided to try The Good and The Beautiful for LA and History and are enjoying it and continued with the next books in Sassafrass Science and stuck with CTC math.  That's the main stuff.  However, I have really struggled with my motivation to do science.  The chapters feel long, I didn't feel like we were getting a ton out of the SCIDAT log books...my kids only like the story but they logbooks became a big chore, science felt very time consuming and even though I kept wanting to love it, my kids weren't retaining what they had learned very well.  Not to put that against the science curriculum it may just be that my kids learn better through different methods.  But I started to feel like it wasn't worth the time when after all the time and effort in science and they couldn't recall much from it later on, yet they could offload detailed facts about things they had learned from a wildkratts episode they had watched a year ago or from watching the Planet Earth and Life series as a family.

With a preschooler and a baby about to join us, I want to be intentional about how we manage our time and learning.  The more my kids would randomly talk about in depth facts from science related videos and documentaries they watched a long time ago, but couldn't remember what we had studied in our homeschool time, it didn't feel like a good investment of our time.  The more I thought about this the more I figured if my kids retain information so much better from videos rather than a living book with notebooking (as much as I love the idea of that) then I should just have them do science learning through videos and then let it be delight directed learning from there.  So if they watch a video on something and they get excited about it, we can look up more on it, watch more videos, look up experiments or demonstrations they can watch and or do.  So this is a compilation of some resources for approaching science in a more unschool-relaxed way of learning that I think we are going to try.  I haven't previewed many of these but saving the links here for myself and anyone else that wants to quickly find free videos for science topics and unit studies.  This will be an ongoing compilation, if you know of any great resources to add please comment and share!  from here you can do notebooking, project based learning, lapbooking or simply narration or as enrichment to go with your packaged science program...there are so many ways to enjoy learning and it's important we don't get stuck within the security blanket of a purchased curriculum product for everything we do,  Sometimes it's easier to just have that open and go curriculum and I totally appreciate that, but we don't have to be hostage to certain products or methods of learning and teaching every subject either.  I'm curious to see how it goes just watching videos, then having the encyclopedia handy for the kids to look and then seeing where things go from there.

5 years old and having a royal ball!

J had her 5th Birthday party last weekend and it was a BALL!  Literally!  She requested that all her friends come dressed up as princesses and have a dance party at the ball.  Here she is wearing her Repunzel dress, which I don't think I ever posted, it was my first time making a dress and I made it for Halloween to go with her GLOWING REPUNZEL HAIR which is a tutorial you can check out with a link to the tutorial for this dress at the end.  The party turned out to be really fun and a everything went smoothly, thanks to having the help of my parents and brother and my awesome friend who let me borrow her folding table and a ton of strands of lights!  We barely pulled it all together before the guests arrived! lol, my mom was still decorating cupcakes and the little cake as they arrived and the guys were in the basement still getting the ballroom set up!

As the girls arrived they decorated a princess gown favor box and filled it with some M&Ms. I just put down a big piece of cardboard and a bunch of crayons, markers and stickers. I found these cute wedding dress favor boxes in the wedding section at the dollar tree they came in packs of 10. They wrote their name on the bottom when they were done and took them home at the end of the party.

As they finished decorating their dresses, they came and sat in the Princess Chair, (something I picked up at the thrift store and have been meaning to give a makeover, it's in great condition, I just want to change it) and had their make up done, received a crown (those tiny comb crowns in the favor section at walmart).  And then they each posed for a Princess Portrait with the Frog Prince (that frog is a puppet from my husband's childhood! They saved a lot of his toys and it's cool to see the kids play with them now)

Meanwhile, as they all finished up their dresses, makeover and portrait with the frog prince, they talked and played with balloons.

Next we played some games that I came across online, I can't way where because I was REALLY tired after a long day and my dad looked up Princess Party Games on his Ipad and just started listing off ideas to me and I have no idea what he was looking at.  

First we did a Princess Walk.  I printed off pictures of various Princesses and related characters and places them on the floor in a circle and then had them walk around the pictures to music.  Everytime the music stopped, my mom would call out a character and whoever was on that character got a candy necklace.  We played until everyone got a necklace.  My mom looked and saw where they were standing and whoever didn't have a necklace yet, she would just call out whatever character they were standing on.  Unfortunately, not long after the girls were complaining about having sticky necks, and J kept using so many diaper wipes to get rid of the sticky feeling her neck was SO red.

Next we played Pin the Pan on Flynn Ryder followed by a Snow White Game called Pass the Poison Apple.  They sat in a circle and as the music played, they would pass an apple around. When the music stopped, whoever was holding the apple had to fall asleep.  At the end of the game, the last person to have the apple had to wake everyone else up with a sweet kiss...they went around and placed a little flower shaped marshmallow on the persons' lips to wake them up. Hershey kisses were suggested, but I didn't feel like messing with the wrappers.

Next we went outside to find Cinderella's lost glass slipper!  I hid J's Cinderella dress up shoe it in the yard and helped them in the right direction using Hot and Cold.  Here they are searching for it!

After that they came inside to do presents and cupcakes because they couldn't go to the ball on an empty stomach!

And this is a HORRIBLE picture but they all turned out blurry of the cupcake table.

After eating cupcakes and snacking on some snacks and pink princess lemonade, they all grabbed a small bottle of bubbles and went back outside. bubbles were also from the wedding section of the dollar tree you get 9 bottles for a dollar!  We put a colorful heart sticker on each one so they didn't look like wedding bubbles.

They had fun blowing bubbles and playing outside some more and then it was time for the pinata...I love this picture...

The pinata was a tough one, so after each princess had multiple tries, dad came in and busted it open.

After they had collected their loot, I brought out their treat bags and we had them put everything in there and wrote their names on them real quickly and then it was FINALLY time for the ball!  We walked them around to the basement door entrance and they walked in to fun music from Tangled, Enchanted, Lizzy McGuire etc.  Them all dancing around like crazy in their princess dresses was one of the cutest things I've ever seen!!!

The party was scheduled for 2 hours and we may have gone just a tiny bit over as they were having so much fun dancing, but it was really fun.  I was kind of anxious at first because I've never hosted a birthday party at my home before, the only other party we did was for her 3rd party and we had it at a big park so I didn't really have to do anything other than brings snacks and cupcakes.  If my parents weren't here to help, I probably wouldn't have been able to be as organized with doing the games and getting everything ready in time and my mom surprised J with the pinata last minute when she saw it was just under $10 at walmart and we just put some of the goodies we were already going to get for the treat bags into the pinanta.

I forgot to take a picture of the cupcake table before the party, so this is after the fact, so there isn't as much there but you get the idea.

 For the cake and cupcakes, I used the gluten free strawberry cupcake recipe from my Cooking for Isaiah cookbook with a basic vanilla buttercream frosting using vegetable shortening instead of butter and vanilla coconut milk instead of dairy milk so these were gluten and dairy free.  The kids loved them, it's really a great recipe, one of my friends was so impressed because it was the first time her daughter has ever finished a cupcake!

As they left J gave them a wand, a lollipop and the flower straw they was intended for the lemonade but we didn't end up using, along with their treat bags and candy dress boxes.  They definitely didn't go home empty handed, I just kept finding cute little things that didn't cost very much that were either on sale or on clearance or were just a regular cute inexpensive item in the party favor section.

Anyways, at the end of the day, this is all you can ask for...

On another winter day last week that was sunny and beautiful looking but had some nasty freezing wind we were looking for some fun.  I found this old better homes and garden activity book that my MIL gave me that my mom also had for us growing up.  I remember when I was a kid with my brother, pouring through the books getting ideas for crafts, activities and experiments, my brother’s entire birthday party was doing almost everything from the outer space book.  Nowadays we just go on pinterest and find a million awesome ideas for anything and everything!!!  But it was fun to pull out the old book and read the page and tell my daughter we were going to make a bubble machine.  They loved this, even my 20 month old figured this out quickly and didn’t even accidentally suck on the straw which I thought might happen…yuk!

To Make a Bubble Machine

You’ll need a empty and clean plastic bottle, milk carton, sour cream container or other container with lid.

Using a knife, cut a small X on one side and then make another X on the opposite side. 

Add some dish soap, about 1-2 tablespoons and fill with water halfway.

Insert a straw into one of the holes and have your child blow and make as much bubbles as they can! 

To extend the activity, when they got tired of making bubbles, we used all the suds on the table to finger paint!

Later that day they got to go to Bounce U.  They needed to get out….I thought it would be fun….wow….we rarely go to places like that and yes it is fun for the kids…it’s also kind of like being in hell! Lol!  However, despite the pushing, shoving, crazy maniac kids and the getting knocked down by bigger kids and accidental bumps to the nose...it was worth it in the end just for the precious moment of Big Sister coaching right before we left.  Bronson kept watching Jordan climb up and go down the big slide but he was too timid...I mean he's 1 and 3/4, I would be too!  But she kept encouraging him so he went for it, but it was hard for him to climb all the way to the top so she stood gaurd behind him, not letting other kids scramble by or jump around and coaching him all the way up, just hearing the way she was encouraging him and talking to him and keeping her hand on him to help him make it to the top, even at times when he got reluctant and wanted to come back down was worth the trip!  I was impressed by her big sistering.  Of course once they got to the top there were two slides to choose from and whichever one he went for was not the one she wanted so she would grab him by the arm or back of his shirt and drag him over to the other slide! lol  

No One Likes a Frowny Face...

Lately our 4.5 year old has really been making an effort to perfect her unhappy mad face, just she she can express herself more clearly at any given opportunity.  It's been getting to be a little much and we were trying to explain to her that if she keeps making ugly faces, her face will stay that way and she will make ugly faces at people even when she doesn't mean to, and no one will see the kind, beautiful person she truly is.  So to help remind her, we told her she was going to have a warning first and then a time out anytime she makes one of those ugly faces.  Then I made this special mirror with her, I was planning to make it anyways just for fun, but decided to tell her it was for her to practice her nice faces.  So yesterday we put it together...

I picked up a purple feather boa and the hand mirror from the dollar store. The glitter is from the dollar store too...it came in her stocking.  we just hot glued the boa to the edges and also hot glued the edges of the mirror and added the glitter.  So far, seems to be helping...She's been proudly practicing :)

Now that they have been recieved...I can show and tell these gifts I made!

Hand painted family last name signs with the date each family established on 12 x 12 inch canvas.   I found a really fine tip paint brush and some Japanese Sumi Ink in my stash that worked out really well for doing all the lettering.  I used the same technique as I did in the Restoration Hardware Inspired Pillows Tutorial.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!  We missed being with family but it was still special having our first Christmas here in our new house and of course....Christmas is special wherever you are because no matter where you are and who you are with, it's all about Christ! And we have been blessed to have met so many wonderful friends since we moved here in May so we have yet to be lonely on the holidays and had a amazing Christmas Eve Dinner with Friends and attended an awesome service, everything was wonderful. On Christmas Day, I meant to make a yummy gluten free chocolate layered cake, but we all ended up taking a long nap on Christmas day which resulted with an overcooked Turkey and some last minute mashed potatoes and steamed peas! lol...and Luckily we already had an awesome meal the night before  also lucky I had this one cupcake in the freezer that the kids could share!

I don't know what this game is called or should be called.  My mother-in-law made it for J and today she was teaching it to her 18 month old brother.  They were having fun, it was nice having them play so nicely while I made Gluten Free Cinnamon Banana Pancakes from the Cooking For Isaiah cookbook.  

Gram painted the walnut shells each a different color and then put ladybug stickers on top.  There are 7 shells and she put 7 little surprises to go under each one, like little jewels, a character noodle, a bean, a button, etc.  So here is how to play....it's so easy, there's really nothing to it but the kids like it.

Eeny meeny miny mo, catch a piggy by the toe, if he hollars let him go, eeny meeny miny mo!

I first discovered eHow (the source for how to do everything) in late 2007 and have seen it go through many transformations.  I started out using it as a writing platform and was able to generate extra income (you can read more about that here) and as I got more involved in the community and with the company, I enjoyed watching it evolve and loved all the useful and interesting information I would come across on the site, as well as the great community, which was all managed by the infamous Rich.  As a long time user of the site, I was asked earlier this year to do this video.  I almost forgot about it and this summer has been so crazy, I just saw today when I was catching up on my email that they had finished it and put it up in June.

When I went to San Francisco for the Last eHow User Meeting (where I got to hang out with Brook Burke and Lisa Roosenblatt after Web 2.0) they gave us an assignment to create something that represented what eHow was to us.  You could make posters, collages, there was playdough...etc.  I took some white clay and formed it into a cube block.  When it was my turn to present my impression of eHow, my fellow eHower's were wondering what my explanation of this little chunk of clay could possibly be.  In my opinion, the white clay cube represented eHow because when you arrive at eHow, there is unlimited potential for projects, learning and inspiration.  That white clay cube could be formed and sculpted into anything, just like when you go to eHow, you can learn how to do everything and anything, all in one place, and it forms and sculpts your know-how and experiences.

I do miss the old eHow days, I have met some truly wonderful people including my friend Maria AKA WriterGig who authors the My Work at Home Mom Blog.   She is a genius at generating income from home with online content.  Another awesome gal is Amy Kuncaitis, author of Joy in the Morning, a gem of a book that will bless anyone and everyone who reads it.  She shares the experience of an out of the blue, rare, life-threatening illness that rendered her healthy four-year old completely paralyzed...

Oh Mr Sun, Sun Mr Golden Sun feat. a Belle Dress

Oh happy day!!!!  After a month of having sick kids, then ice storms and bad weather, we've been cooped up and feeling crummy for about a month now!  And finally the sun has come out and it was warmed up!  Yesterday I was able to take the kids out to the sand volleyball pit to play in the sand and then we went swimming in the hot tub and enjoyed being outside.  Today is another beautiful day, we spent the morning at a playdate at the Disney store and J wore her custom made Belle Dress made by my mom and had a blast, then when we got into the car she kept complaining that it was too hot and I had to put the AC on!!!  Talk about changes in the weather!  Having the sun back again, I feel like a new person!

I've been meaning to show you guys this Belle Dress my creative mommy made, she is the best!  I was getting tired of buying princess dresses for $20-30 that literally are falling apart after one day.  J freaks out about any strings hanging off her clothes, she gets grossed out and I have to be trimming those frayed princess dresses constantly.  So my mom made her this nice dress for Christmas.  Here she is dancing and singing in her Belle Dress.  She had just watched a DVD with clips of Jackie Evancho while she competed in America's Got Talent and wanted to sing like her...I just love 3 years olds...no inhibitions!

FAB Friday! - Sunny Choi

FAB Friday was started by my friend Crystal Escobar from Wanna Be Balanced, a super awesome blog!  I was so excited and honored when she featured me on one of her FAB. Fridays and I've been wanting to jump on the wagon and start participating in FAB Friday's too!  You can read about how FAB Fridays started on her blog HERE.
I'm super excited to do this because there are so many great women out there who inspire me and or are just down right FABULOUSLY AWESOME!

The first lady I wanted to share with you is not someone I know personally, but I just discovered her and wanted to share.  I used to spend hours in front of the piano every day up until I moved away for college and then I'd make the effort to go spend hours in the piano practice rooms in the music department as much as possible.  But the past three years since having my two wonderful children, I've really gotten out of it.  I used to sit down and compose songs or improvise and enjoy it so much!  I know I have DEFINITELY lost a lot of the talent I used to have...that's why they say "practice practice practice!"  Anyways, I came across this girl who plays the piano and has a bunch of videos on You Tube and it just really inspired me because she is playing like the way I USED to play and really inspired me to MAKE time to practice and get comfortable at the piano again.  Watching her videos reminded me of how much I love to play and realize how much I miss it.  So, piano practice time is going into my schedule, if I keep waiting for a good time to practice...it'll never come so I have to make it happen.  I'll let you know how it goes!

Sunny Choi

Not only is she a gorgeous young woman, She is a Canadian (as am I - until my citizenship goes through soon, then I guess I'll be considered dual!).  She has the gift of playing by ear, meaning she can play any song she hears without needing the music and has played for audiences of thousands.  Her musical resume/biography is extensive, but she also has big ambitions..."While I am young, I want to be able to try a lot of different things and I still think there will be time to achieve my goal of becoming a physician.”

Sunny immigrated to Canada in 1999 with her family. Sunny started piano since she was 5 years old and she made use of her talent starting in high school by performing for weddings and other events to earn her allowance. Sunny has a unique ability to play piano music by listening to music only, rather than learning and reading from the actual music score. She launched her website www.sunnychoi.ca to start marketing her talent and performs for weddings, corporate events and other private events to show off her skills. Earlier this year, Sunny performed for a government-funded Tibet Cultural Event by performing Tibetan music that was never written for piano. Sunny plays other instruments such as flute.

Sunny has won numerous awards for piano including a big win in 2001 when she was recognized as a provincial final competition winner. Sunny is currently studying human biology. When she was asked the reason for choosing her major, she replied “There are too many other things that I want to study and achieve in life that is beyond just music”.

Since starting her university education, Sunny has come to realize that her main interest is in senior citizens’ health. Sunny volunteers weekly at Toronto Rehab as a social support to elderly patrons. Sunny stated that she feels easily connected and comfortable around seniors rather than doing the same with children. Her ultimate goal in life is to run her own senior care home and to work in this home as a geriatric physician.

Despite Sunny’s busy schedule, she somehow squeezed in extra time during the last summer to volunteer at a HIV/AIDS hospice in Malaysia for a month. Sunny is a rare individual for efficiently spending her time for being able to do three completely different activities all at once.

Playing with Kitty

Okay, so I've just been trying to catch up from all the stuff we've been doing this summer.  Here is a video of J playing with my brother's kitty named Riku at my parent's house, and yes, she's wearing her flower girl dress because she is obsessed with her "wedding dress".  When the baby gets a bit older we're going to have to get a kitty, she is a kitty LOVER!  One of her favorite FREE activities to do is go to the pet store and play with the kittens, which works for me, I like cats too....esspecially how low maintenance they are!

Also, I gave my husband a HAIRCUT last night.  Yep, an at home hair job...I was nervous to do it but he convinced and assured me that he was okay with getting a buzz cut if it didn't turn out.  I don't have a hair cutting kit so I had to use his beard trimmer and sewing scissors...and I have to admit I thought I might accidentally cut my finger off because they were a little BIG for cutting hair with...but...it worked out.  It actually didn't turn out too bad..no buzz cut needed!  I'll have to take a pic...it's not perfect...but it's not noticeably bad either...I'll post a before and after pic soon!  And my husband is so happy I was able to do it decently because now he doesn't have to pay to go to the barber anymore...lol....always the cheapo!
