Unicorn Art for Girls Room

My new friend and neighbor redid her daughter's room this weekend while she was with her grandma to surprise her.  Her daughter really likes unicorns and so she found this unicorn art that she really liked on Rosenberry Rooms 

I already had a 16 x 16 canvas on hand so I just had her pick out the tissue paper, cardstock and buttons she wanted me to use.  She also brought the funnies from the newspaper to use as the unicorn's mane, (her daughter loves to read the funnies) and the original unicorn artwork appears to be a page out of a phone book or something like that.  Here is my customized knock off version of the Rosenberry Room's Oopsey Daisy Fine Art for Kids Line.  I used yellow acrylic paint, modge podge, blue ink, glitter and hot glue for the buttons....

And when my 4 yo daughter saw me finishing this up, she begged to do one too.  We had these smaller canvases that she had previously painted on in her room that were just muddled paint colors so we added to that and together we made this one for her room and have another canvas she can't wait to make another one on...she had so much fun cutting pieces of paper and ribbons and painting on the modgepodge, dumping on the glitter...I helped very little...I got in trouble if I did any helping without her instruction! lol I actually really loved how she cut out diamonds with the blue paper and said they were stars and then made them sparkle with the glitter.....we haven't really done artwork together like this before and it was so fun to watch her mind work as it evolved.

I finally got this portrait done recently and have been waiting to post it on here since I wanted my winner, Crystal from the hit mom blog Wanna Be Balanced, to be surprised when she received it.  She was the winner of my custom portrait giveaway I held.....let's just say it was a while ago.  Anyways, we all know how it is with little ones to sit down and complete a bigger project, especially one like this because I need a good chunk of time to just sit down and focus on it without interruption.  I was feeling a little rusty when I pulled out the art supplies, but as you can see I had such a cute picture to work with, I was really happy with how it turned out!  Thanks Crystal for being so patient with me, I'm sure you probably figured it wasn't going to happen! lol!

Here is a sample I made for my 7-12 year old students for an art lesson at the studio I used to work at. It's colored with a combo of Prisma Markers and colored pencil.  I just came across this today during my spring cleaning and thought  I would share :)  It makes me want to do some "arting" which is a term J came up with today at dinner.  I was in the kitchen and she was supposed to be eating her pizza (crust made with gluten free bisquik) when I heard her exclaim "Mom, I'm arting!!!" at first I thought she meant...you know...farting.  But when I looked around the corner she was happily drawing a picture and then repeated "I'm arting mom, look!"

Fine Art on the Cheap

I've really been wanting to put some nice fine art prints in my daughter's room, specifically a painting portraying Jesus's love for children. Buying framed fine art prints can be pricey however. Well, I found this 3 opening frame at Micheal's on clearance for $2 so I picked that up. Then I picked up these small art prints, the center one is a 5x7 post card and the other 2 are 3x4 cards that were less than $1. I think the post card might have been $1.99. I had some purple scrapbooking paper laying around, so I used that as matting on the smaller prints and woila! I was able to put some fine art prints in my daughter's room for around $5! One of her favorite songs to sing before she goes to bed is "Jesus Loves Me" and so I put the frame by her bed and we point it out when she sings the song or says her prayers.

Another great way to get fine art prints to display in your home is to recycle the pictures from fine art calenders. One artist I enjoy is Robert Duncan, I buy his calenders and then save them after the year is over, that way I can cut out the large art prints and frame them. The great thing about recycling fine art calenders like this is that you can rotate out the art in your frame to suite the season/ time of year! A very frugal way to add to your home decor!

Abstract Art

This is an acrylic abstract painting from a school project a few years ago. It's not SUPER abstract as you can tell what it is, but abstract art doesn't have distinct rules...at least that I'm aware of. If you take an image and abstract it from it's original form, then it's abstract...that was this assignment. I think this was from a perfume ad...it must have been...those are always sensual.
