WOW! I honestly can't believe it's Saturday already!  The weekend kind of snuck up on me this week it's been busy! Here are the featured posts from last week..

it's officially fall

We recently went to Pooley's Pumpkin Patch in Bennington, NE with our MOPS group and it was so much fun.  It was a cute, simple pumpkin patch but with plenty of fun things to keep the kids occupied from feeding the chickens, picking up and petting the baby chicks, swinging on giant tractor tire swings, a corn maze, a hay bail maze, petting zoo, tractor race track (john deer pedal cars and john deer tricycles) pony rides, hay rides and of course a pumpkin patch.  My kids had so much fun climbing on and playing on the little hay bails, one  of my new friends from my MOPS group and I decided, who needs an expensive rainbow playset in the backyard when all you need is hay bails?  The kids loved everything, but the hay bails, tricycle track and the baby kittens roaming around were the highlights.

The Gettys

This past Sunday, I found out that the there was going to be a free concert by the Gettys at Westside Baptist, a church in Omaha.  I saw it on the website and although I had never heard of them, I had heard the songs "In Christ Alone" and "Power of The Cross" so my 4 year old and I went and it was a great concert.  Based on those two songs I had heard, I had no idea they were irish, but at the concert, it was VERY Irish with an awesome fiddler and it was just fun, they had a great sound and message and we enjoyed all of their music.  We picked up their new album "Awaken The Dawn" and are really enjoying it.  My four year old closes her eyes when she hears it she gets really into it, and I can hear her singing the songs in her room while playing with strawberry shortcake.  I'm surprised their cd is only $4.99 on amazon with free shipping, so the cheapo in me is a little agitated I paid $10 for mine at the concert but oh well, glad to support them.  It was worth it, we have been playing the cd over and over all week. I'm so excited to find new christian music that I really like, I even picked up the song books because I've been wanting some new piano music for a long time and this was exactly the type of stuff I like to play.  I like it because it's unique, it doesn't sound like every other song you hear on the christian radio station and it's pretty with it's irish flavor and now after watching them live and meeting them afterwards, I just like everything about them. oh, and I don't have to skip any of the songs either.

PS- I've decided to go into my first arts and craft show, and I paid for my spot TODAY so it's happening...I've been busy whipping up goodies for my table, some of the things I'm working on is baby neck ties (I figured out how to make my first one the night before we moved because we had birthday pictures the next day with our photographer (miss you Tessa!)) and have been wanting to make more ever since, headbands, prints, artwork and decor for kids rooms and nursery...I'll try to post some sneak peaks when I can!  I'm sure some of it will end up on my Etsy shop...which is still empty...I think we'll have a grand opening with a giveaway so stay tuned!

This past weekend we had another great success from our Cooking For Isaiah cookbook.  We made the Cinnamon Toasted Belgian Waffle and it was SO delicious, the cinnamon in the waffles with classic waffle texture, crunchy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, it was hard to remember I wasn't actually eating cinnamon toast.  These gluten free cinnamon waffles topped with real maple syrup was the best saturday morning breakfast we've had in a long time.  So far, Silvana Nardone's Cooking For Isaiah Cookbook of gluten free, dairy free recipes has yet to dissapoint...everything we have tried has been awesome and I've even used her flour blend in other recipes like the gluten free blueberry muffins with coconut struesel, chocolate chip muffins and strawberry muffins and I love it.  This is my favorite cookbook, the only other cookbook I have used so much (and not even as much as Silvana's is the big BHG cookbook.

If you are not feeling brave enough to make you own flour blend and get cooking from this awesome book, well, first of all, there's nothing to be afraid of, it's super easy although I was intimidated about the different flours and everything at first...I don't know why it's really not a big deal...ANYWAYS, if you'd rather stick with the gluten free bisquik mix, or if you not gluten free and making normal waffles, make according to package directions and add 1-2 tsp cinnamon to the batter and a bit of brown sugar.  

I'm not working for Silvana or her book, but I just can't help but rave about it every time I make something out of it!  I think she is a genius.

How to Make a Hearth Guard

When we moved into our new house earlier this year, one of the first things we had to do to keep the kids safe was to put some kind of padding or bumper around the brick fireplace.  We have a double sided fireplace that the kids are always running and playing around.  I searched online for how to babyproof the fireplace and found the hearth gaurd and other various hearth kushion products but with having two brick fireplace edges to protect, it was going to cost me close to $100 for everything I needed.  So I headed down to Home Depot (or Lowes) can't remember which one it was...and bought a roll of garage door weather stripping for around $20 and some sticky velcro at the dollar store and was able to babyproof and make my own hearth guard, protecting 2 fireplaces for under $25.

 Get your hook and loop fasteners

 and your rubber garage weather stripping

 open up the velcro fastener and lay out flat

 Then fasten the two velcro strips together

 Cut the long velcro strip into smaller 3-4 inch strips

 Remove paper to reveal sticky adhesive and apply velcro to bottom of weather stripping

Peel off the remaining paper to reveal the sticky adhesive and then carefully line up your weather stripping along your fireplace edge and firmly press down to secure the hearth protector.  It's not the most beautiful thing to look at but I figure it we are going to have to put some ugly rubber on the fireplace to keep the kids safe, we didn't want to spend $100 on it when it's equally safe yet equally unattractive to do it for less that $25.  After doing to fronts and sides of both fireplaces, we still had some left over that's come in handy for other projects around the house.

And talk about a redo!  This is one cute onsie redo by Amanda at The Little Giggler, isn't this so girly and adorable? The cute little munchkin modeling the outfit puts a smile on my face! :P

Personalized Hanger - Baby Name Gift

I made this personalized hanger for my baby niece who was just born as a funny, cute way to remember how my 4 yo daughter named her "Rainbow Gotters" while my sister was pregnant.  During the pregnancy, Rainbow Gotters kind of became the baby's name until she was born and although her parents gave her a beautiful name, my daughter was a little upset when she found out Rainbow Gotter's wasn't going to be her real name...because that's the name SHE picked out and that SHE wanted her to have.  So we said that it could be her special cousin name for her.  This personalized hanger would be a cute baby name gift for real names too :)

 Trace the outline of the wood hanger on the back of your decorative paper.  repeat for both sides and then cut out the hanger shape from the paper. set aside.

 Paint the sides of the hanger and the front and back if you like.  (although that will be covered by the paper so isn't really necesarry)

Once paint is dry, using a foam brush, apply an even coat of modgepodge over the wooden hanger.  Carefully line up the precut paper and press onto the hanger, smoothing the surface.  Allow that to dry and then repeat on the back side.

Now, using your letter stickers,  personalize the hanger by adding the baby's (or whoever's) name and embelishing with gems or other stickers.
